Onychomycosis
WHAT CAUSES ONYCHOMYCOSIS?
Onychomycosis is caused by a fungal infection of the nails, commonly due to dermatophyte fungi such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, or Candida albicans.
Other risk factors that contribute to the development of Onychomycosis include aging, poor circulation, a weakened immune system, wearing tight fitting shoes, walking barefoot in public places, having a nail injury or previous nail infection, and having diabetes or other health conditions that affect the immune system.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Laser treatment for Onychomycosis, also known as toenail fungus, works by using intense light energy to heat and destroy the fungal cells in the nail bed. The laser device is used to pass through the nail plate and target the fungus without causing any damage to the surrounding tissues.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?
Laser treatment for onychomycosis is generally considered painless. Some people may feel a slight warming or pinching sensation during the procedure, but it is usually well-tolerated.
The procedure usually takes a few minutes per nail and does not typically require anesthesia.
AFTER THE TREATMENT
After the treatment, patients can resume normal activities immediately and do not need to take any time off work or school. However, it may take several weeks to several months for the damaged nail to heal and for a new, healthy nail to grow in its place.
Multiple laser treatments may be necessary to completely eliminate the fungal infection, and the number and frequency of treatments will depend on the severity of the infection and other individual factors. It is important to note that laser treatment is not always effective for all cases of toenail
HOW MANY SESSIONS
The number of laser sessions required to remove onychomycosis can vary depending on factors such as the severity of the infection, type of laser used, and individual response to treatment.
Typically, we recommend a session every week for 4 consecutive weeks. Afterwards, you can do one session every two weeks.
