Treatment of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia, also known as fibrositis, is a disorder characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatique, lack of proper sleep, memory loss and mood swings.
The term “fibro fog” is widely used to describe the patient’ts inability to focus or concentrate on mental tasks.
Symptoms may also include:

  • Temperomandibular pain or TMJ disorders
  • Irritable bowl syndrome
  • Migraines and/or tension headaches

Treatment include release of the muscles associated with these symptoms via manual techniques, as well as anti-inflammotory modalities and very important, relaxation techniques and proper breathing. I follow a holistic approach to ensure that patients feel in control of their symptoms and condition, so proper advice on how to manage this condition from a physical point of view, will be given.

Stress Relief & Tension Headaches

Stress related symptoms include chronic headaches, which can be in the form of migraines or tension headaches. Treatment include the manual release of muscles which may cause the headache by means of referred pain mainly from the neck, upper body and shoulders.
These trigger points are released by massage, possible dry needling and also anti-inflammatory modalieties such as ultrasound and interferencial therapy.
Very important is that I always include advise regarding posture, breathing, home exercises and also practical and applicable stretches as part of the session.
A personalized exercise or stretch programme can be sent via email.

Post-operative Conditions

Post-operative therapy for orthopeadic and soft-tissue conditions forms part of physiotherapy. Note that the specific surgeon’s regime will be followed, especially for orthopeadic conditions, which include neck and back surgery.
Follow-up sessions are required to determine progress.

Sport Injuries

Sport injuries should be attend to as soon as possible to avoid chronic muscle spasm and compensation.
The body will compensate for lack of function of the specific muscle group by compensating for it. This result in over-usage for the overloaded muscle, which will lead to possible muscle spasms. The body always strives towards symmetry, especially in very active people. So muscle imbalances needs to be sorted as soon as possible.
Suitable exercises will be given with each session. Follow-up session/s is required to check progress, and the patient will be re-assessed with a progressed exercise regime.

Lymph Drainage Treatment

Manual lymphatic drainage is a unique, therapeutic method of stimulating the movement of fluids in the tissues. The gentle, rhythmic massage movements follow the direction of lymph flow and procedure rapid results. It assists in picking up and removing not just fluids, but all the waste products and debris from our system. It is also successful in breaking fibrosis and fibrotic areas of lymphodemous limbs.

Postural Correction & Core Strengthening

Core strengthening forms the very basis of a good posture. We are all guilty at some stage of not having the proper core strength to support and sustain a good posture. The position of our pelvic girdle, through which our center point of gravity lies, is critical when we sit for long hours. This will also determine the position of the rest of the upper body, which is the shoulder, neck and the head.
As a physiotherapist, core strengthening and postural correction forms a very important part of therapy, to enhance a functional and pain free lifestyle. Instructions as well as necessary graphics will be given on how to strengthen core muscles to improve the stamina of these important muscles.
So come see me for a consultation on how to get rid of the “poked chin syndrome”.
