Acne Scarring
WHAT IS ACNE SCARRING?
Acne scarring is areas of permanent skin damage caused when severe acne causes damage to the skin’s tissue. As the acne heals, the tissue is replaced with scar tissue, leaving behind discolored and pitted areas on the skin. Acne scarring is a common condition that many people suffer from and can range from mild to severe.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Laser treatments for acne scarring typically use an ablative laser to vaporize the affected area of skin. This creates a controlled injury to the skin, which triggers the skin’s natural healing process. As the skin repairs itself, the laser treatment helps to reduce scars, smooth rough skin texture, and reduce discoloration from acne scarring.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?
Generally, you can expect slight discomfort as the laser is applied, and a feeling like a rubber band snapping the skin. Your skin may become slightly red and swollen after the treatment, and you may experience tightness and dryness
AFTER THE TREATMENT
After the treatment you may experience some swelling, redness, and/or dryness for a few days. To minimize discomfort, it is important to follow the post-treatment instructions given to you by your skin specialist. These instructions might include avoiding sun exposure and avoiding certain skincare products.
HOW MANY SESSIONS
The number of laser treatments recommended for acne scarring varies, depending on the individual and the severity of the condition. Your skin therapist will be able to advise you after your second or third session how many more sessions is required. The sessions is 4 to 6 weeks apart.
